It will be important for research to explore the nuance in how issues like these during stay-at-home order provide or constrain opportunities for sex. We also need to acknowledge the high proportion of sexual minority participants in the sample—while their inclusion is not a direct limitation to our data, we are unable to comment on how different recruitment methods may have “over-sampled” individuals from this population. From this perspective, our data may not be representative of all sexual minority individuals. Considering the importance of sexual health for general health and wellbeing [14], there is a need to better understand the impact of social restrictions on individuals’ wellbeing and their sexuality. To address these and other questions around the impact of COVID-19 related lockdown measures and their effect on sexual behaviors, the I-SHARE consortium was established in early 2020. This is a collaborative effort including 30 countries with the aim of investigating sexual and reproductive health during the COVID-19 pandemic around the world [15].

Finally, a study from Kenya reported a decline in sexual satisfaction among married heterosexual partners (Osur et al., 2021). First, most of the research was conducted online because of pandemic-related restrictions. Future research should investigate how the pandemic has affected the population that has not been reached by online surveys. It is likely that the current results are not adequate to capture the impact of COVID-19 on the sexuality of different population groups that vary, for example, for age, culture, language, socioeconomic status, etc. Third, the large use of self-report data may be subject to social desirability, recall, and/or other biases.

Moreover, this trend was greater for those who were in a relationship with respect to those who were single or dating casually (Wignall et al., 2021). In a study conducted on a sample of Turkish women found a significant increase in frequency of intercourse during the pandemic and a significant decrease in the quality of sexual life compared to 6–12 months prior to the pandemic (Yuksel and Ozgor, 2020). Moreover, during the COVID-19 quarantine, women reported a lower desire to become pregnant, a lower intent in using contraception, and an increase in menstrual disorder compared to before. Furthermore, FSFI scores were better 6–12 months prior to the pandemic than during the pandemic (Yuksel and Ozgor, 2020). Individual opportunities to engage in solo and partnered sex—even during a pandemic—are linked to the larger socio-cultural context in which people live (Wellings et al., 2006).

Moreover, 11.5% admitted to buying a sex toy since COVID-19 began and of these, 24.0% admitted that it was their first (Coombe et al., 2021). Although gender and attitudes towards women is an important subject studied by different fields of psychology, there are a finite number of studies on women in Turkey. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship of benevolent and hostile sexism in adult women with attitudes towards gender roles and different sex roles. In line with this purpose, Ambivalent Sexism Scale, BEM Sex Role Inventory and Gender Roles Attitude Scale were applied to 251 women chosen by adequate sampling method in order to determine the benevolent and hostile sexism, attitudes towards gender and gender roles. As a result of the study, it was found out that the gender role attitudes predict the benevolent and hostile sexism points in a substantive way.

Future research, including qualitative studies, should include contextual questions. In addition, findings regarding 18-year-old individuals should be interpreted with caution owing to the relatively small number of these participants in our sample. Finally, although the sample represents a diverse cross-section of students from several high schools/districts, it is possible that regional differences influenced prevalence estimates. Despite these limitations, to our knowledge, this study is among the first to examine the prevalence and nature of sexting in a racially and ethnically diverse school-based sample and to demonstrate a link between sexting and sexual behavior. For both boys and girls, teens who engaged in sexting behaviors were more likely to have begun dating and to have had sex than those who did not sext. Although our survey did not ask for the identity of the sender/receiver of the sext messages, these results suggest that sexting may occur within the context of dating.
